POLITICS IS ONLY SURVIVED BY THE HUMOR IT OFFERS

Comedy and satire has become so great a part of politics, that Republican representative,   Rep.John Fleming  wrote on Facebook that Planned Parenthood was engaging in “abortion by the wholesale.” He was unaware of the publication of The Onion as a satirical news outlet. He read an article titled, “Planned Parenthood Opens $8 Billion Abortionplex.” not knowing it wasn't real.

MSNBC plays more Bill Maher, Jon Stewart,Stephen Colbert. Saturday Night Live, and some of the late night comedians than I usually get to see on a regular basis.  This Week with George Stephanopoulos usually has a bit of  the Sunday Funnies taken from the same sources.

Recently, About.com listed the top 10 political comedians in their view.  If you haven't seen them, you should look for them now.  There has to be something to laugh about in this election!.  Click here for the article.

There are many places for daily humor.  Two favorites are: The Onion
Another, written by Andy Borowitz can be subscribed to for free and offers many good belly laughs to kick in your endorphins as long as you bring you sense of humor to the Internet.

`While trying to sort out thoughts as to where my head is right now instantly gave me an analogy: trying to see a complete and intact picture reflected from a broken mirror.  As if the reality of a degenerating retina doesn't do enough of that, the political system is doing it as well.

Romney is as elusive as an ant in the kitchen when you swatted at it and missed.  The man is incapable of making a coherent script of his goal for action as president.  Today he has been accusing President Obama of character assassination of Romney.  Apparently he doesn't listen to himself.  Today he couldn't remember what he had said but confirmed that 'I don't remember what I said, but I stand behind it, whatever it was I said'

Understanding the man is as clear as looking  through a kaleidoscope.  As soon as you move slightly, the whole picture changes. He doesn't remember what he has said because he hasn't said the same thing often enough for it to get into his longer term memory. His advisers are as effective as all the young MBAs who were being churned out of colleges in the 80s and on.  They had learned little but one-size-fits-all rules when they hadn't yet learned that one size just does not fit all.  Who do the marketers think they are kidding?  Women's fashion catalogs have been trying to save money on these items forever.  A size 2 petite will never fit a 3X,

Paul Krugman, Nobel Prize winning economist,  a far better economist than Paul Ryan, should be listened to by the legislators.  The way to come out of a depression should be one in which money must be spent to get out of it.  In 1930, my Dad owned offices and stores.  Those hurt by the depression could not pay their rents, many units would be emptied if he demanded rent paid immediately.  New tenants were given three months free of rent to get himself started.  My father borrowed money, from a frugal old Yankee, to buy a farm.  The investment balanced our lives.  We ate.  My father allowed a sand and gravel company to take away a stone filled hill to make better farm land out of his       acreage.  He got 50 cents for every load that left our driveway. My parents sold cedar posts, manure, milk, eggs, flowers, and anything anyone wanted that was in season and didn't deplete what we needed.  We stayed on the farm through WWII and ate better than most of our friends on rations.  He was an uneducated (a fifth grade education in a small village in the Greek mountains), an immigrant who figured out economics logically and by watching how some others were managing.  When he was 102, the local Board of Trade gave him an honorary title as Mayor of the section of the city in which he owned his property.and still walking around collecting his rents

One has to wonder what kind of parents all the people who argue against more regulations are or were.  Read Lord of the Flies, a book written decades ago that clearly shows the psychology and action with no regulations. In the 70s, schools listened to the students and had open campuses, allowing students to do whatever they wanted about class attendance  That resulted in some very bad outcomes and very poor education.  Imagine a country with no laws, no police force, no reason for people to behave in a way that was safe for themselves and those around them.

If you can imagine that, you will recognize the Republican parties view for our future.

THE MOST ASSININE CAMP[AIGN AD

Last evening I saw the most ridiculous ad I could ever hope to see.  It confirms Grover Norquist's statement that they know what they want for a President...someone who can just sign his name.  Romney may qualify for that thought I doubt, as a President that he can qualify for much more.  His new ad, taking clips from various things he has said and from others, put through some electronic vehicle to distort them, asks if we want to know why he is running for President.  He then goes on to list the things he loves, grits, America, cars, great lakes, and many more elements contained within the United States,  It might equal, if that qualifies one to be President, almost everyone who has a voice in our country.

What he doesn't mention , beyond what the country does for him, is what presidential skills  he brings to the country.  So far he has lied about what he thinks he has done.  He touts his business credentials which are pretty non-existent.  Bain Capital really did nothing for jobs in the USA.  In Massachusetts, while he was governor, MA was 47th in the country for jobs created.  So far the only thing he can claim is that he would make Grover Norquist happy (the man who forbids any new taxes and just wants a President who can sign his name to the bills Norquist and friends approve.).

THERE ARE ALMOST 5 MILLION MORE WOMEN THAN MEN IN THE USA

Today, I heard someone as a media guest say something about "women and other minorities".  The US census reports there are about 5 million more women than men.  How does that make women a minority?  Does this show why Legislators (more men than women) believe the world outside is made in their image?

The Republicans have completely lost their integrity.  In dealing with a law to stop the abuse of women, they have eliminated it applying to Lesbians.  Since when do the politicians get to decide which females are not women?

Republicans have a problem with women and are attempting to control them by violating their.vaginas as punishment for not wanting to carry an unwanted child to term.  They are taking away medical care, cancer screening, and other important elements of medical care by defunding Planned Parenthood.  Are they imitating cruelty of history to 'keep them barefoot and pregnant?'

Sent to me with no author is the following analogy.

"Life is like a penis - simple, relaxed and hanging free . . ... .
..It's women who make it hard !!

FOLLOW THE CONSTITUTION: SEPARATE CHURCH AND STATE

In my naivete I assumed when important political figures grossly and knowingly lie and violate the constitution by making laws based on religion that are clearly meant to skirt federal laws of long standing, there must be some federal laws being broken that would stop these people from doing such wrongs.  Since the practice seems to be continuing without interruption, am I wrong or are people skirting the law with rationalizations?

Mitt Romney gave a speech at Notre Dame as though all America is Christian.  Some media people balanced (for the sake of our collective sanity) by playing a 30 year ago speech by Mario Cuomo which took into consideration that we are not all religious nor Christian.  Brandeis, a predominantly Jewish sponsored university takes in students of all faiths.  A commencement speaker touting Judaism as a singular great religion and all people who practice it as being the most moral, etc, would be similarly insulting.

It seems to me to be about time religion is treated the same way as homosexuality is treated by some religious people.  We should assume that it is a choice to have this illness which can be cured by thinking logically and accepting that churches are just another big business and should pay taxes like all other  institutions do.  Those of us who are not partaking of religious institutions should not have to pay taxes to support them (indirectly as we all do by their tax-free status). To my knowledge, there is nothing in the Constitution saying that churches should be tax exempt.  Unfortunately that has been taken advantage of by cults and charlatans claiming to be heads of religions.

States like Kansas and Oklahoma are behaving as though they have seceded from the other United States in the bizarre way they are making restrictive laws and interpreting them as presumably based on Bible scripture. When religion can dictate what can be taught in our public schools, or not, the separation of church and state has been violated.   When politicians can override medical prescriptions, there is a great deal wrong with our system.

IS A RECORD IN THE GUINESS BOOK WORTH YOUR LIFE?

We hear, often, about someone gaining a new Guinness Book record.  What we don't hear are the many who are killed while trying for it. One has to wonder why so many risk death.  I suppose if your biology revs up your adrenalin instead of giving you an acute anxiety attack, you might cling rock faces, jump motorcycles over dozens of cars or whatever.

Recently a 44 year old surfer from Hawaii, rode a 44 ft high wave near Portugal. It is rather a an impressive sight when you realize if he had been a novice, tons of water crashing in on him would have ended his life rather quickly.  Click here to see a video of that ride,

Men fight bulls, race cars at phenomenal speeds, explore caves, dive below ice, and the list seems almost endless.  People do risky things alone and in groups.  Personally, the thoughts only remind me of my sage professors advice in 1949, "If you have an urge to climb a mountain, lie down until the urge passes."  I have always found this good advice very easy to follow.

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY

Pro-yiayia 1982
Once you become a mother, it is an experience and identity which never leaves you.  The relationship between parent and child is full of feelings of maternal protection, and  child's dependency.  Mutual emotional dependencies persists throughout lives.

Oft said, we can pick our friends buy not our relatives.  If you have been lucky, your mother will be a role model, a good feedback person, and her love will help her child to grow with self-confidence.  We are not all so fortunate because mothers are the products of their own mothers who may not have been prepared for the responsibilities themselves.  Ignorant, political men and women who know nothing of what it takes to raise a mentally healthy, secure  confidant child, healthy and well-nurtured, are preventing mothers' abilities to plan by whom, when and if to have a child.

Ignoring the Constitution which makes a clear demand for separation of church and state,  these hypocritical people who think they are speaking for God, want smaller government when it means taking care of the poor, educating and feeding children, keeping a roof over their heads and warmth enough to stay healthy, are committing the most heinous grievances to our country and the welfare of our citizens.

On this Mother's Day, I can only hope that mothers will unite to save their children, born and unborn, and vote these individuals out of state and federal offices in the next elections..
